All sterling silver jewellery naturally tarnishes over time, especially when exposed to air and moisture; however, there are ways to retain its original shine and minimise the tarnishing process:
- Wear it often – the natural oils in your skin can create a protective layer.
- Use a jewellery box or pouch when not wearing your jewellery to minimise exposure to air.
- Use a polishing cloth – occasionally, wipe your jewellery with a polishing cloth to remove any gradual tarnish and residue that may accelerate tarnishing.
If your pieces begins to look dull, here’s how to bring it back to life:
- Simple soap and water: Gently clean your silver with a soft cloth or toothbrush. Rinse well and pat dry with a soft towel.
- Baking soda fix: For a deeper clean, make a paste from baking soda and water, gently rub it onto your jewellery, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely.
- Specialists silver cleaning kits can be purchased for more advanced tarnishing.
Tarnishing will happen much faster when it comes into contact with agents such as perfume, salty air, sulphur, skin creams, hairspray, chlorine and acidic skin ph.
